BULLYING AND HOW PARENTS CAN HELP:
What is bullying? Bullying entails repeated acts by someone perceived as physically or psychologically more powerful.
There are two key components: repeated harmful acts and an imbalance of power.
When your child has no sense of security, whether that is at school, on the bus, at home or anywhere-- there is a problem and he/she needs help in learning how to stop the bullying.
How can parents help? Take bullying seriously whether it is at school or at home with a sibling. Help your child feel empowered to tell and confident that he/she will be helped. Help them understand things do not always change overnight and that sometimes there are no easy answers when dealing with a bully.
Help build his/her confidence, make sure he/she knows they deserve to be treated with respect by everyone and that they should treat everyone with respect.
Help your child to understand the difference between being bullied and having a conflict with someone. Help your child learn to deal with the small conflicts of the world without rescuing them. Help him/her figure out how to solve a small problem on his/her own--it builds confidence and prepares him/her for the times an adult is not there to solve the problem.
Be a good role model--show your child how to deal with a bully that results in a positive outcome.
